2024 SSS Disability Benefit

The SSS Disability Benefit is money given to people who can’t work anymore because of a permanent disability. This money can be given all at once (a lump sum) or every month (a monthly pension). How it’s given depends on how much you’ve paid into the SSS.

Different Kinds of Disability Benefits

There are two kinds of disability benefits:

  • Monthly Payment: If you’ve made at least 36 monthly payments to the SSS before you became disabled, you can get a monthly disability pension.
  • Lump-sum payment: This is for people who are disabled for less than a year or who have made less than 36 monthly payments before they became disabled.

If you’re fully disabled and have made less than 36 payments, you get a lump sum that’s equal to the monthly pension times the number of payments you’ve made, or 12 times the monthly pension, whichever is more.

Suppose you’re partially disabled and have made less than 36 payments. In that case, you get the monthly pension times the number of payments you’ve made, times the percentage of your disability, or the monthly pension times 12 times the percentage of your disability, whichever is more.

Who Can Get the SSS Disability Benefit?

To get a disability pension, you must have made at least 36 monthly payments before becoming disabled. You get a lump sum if you’ve made less than 36 payments.

You can apply for the SSS disability benefit if you have a long-term disability, whether it’s full or partial. The SSS covers different kinds of illnesses and disabilities:

  • Partially Disabled: This means you’ve lost the use of a body part, but you can still work.
  • Fully Disabled: This means you’ve lost your sight, lost two limbs, have total paralysis of two limbs, have brain damage causing insanity or imbecility, or other conditions approved by the SSS.

If you’re fully and permanently disabled, you can get a disability pension every month for the rest of your life. But if you get better or go back to work, the SSS stops the pension.

How Much is the SSS Disability Benefit?

The amount of pension you get each month depends on how long you’ve been a member of the SSS and how much you’ve paid in before you became disabled. Only members who are fully and permanently disabled can get a monthly pension for life.

Here’s how much pension you can get:

Years of Membership
Monthly Pension
Less than 10 years
P1,000
At least 10 years
P1,200
At least 20 years
P2,400

If you qualify, you can get an extra P500 every month on top of your SS Disability Pension. Starting from January 2017, there’s also an extra reward of P1,000. The SSS uses different formulas to figure out how much lump sum to give to members who are fully and partially disabled.

If you have up to five children who depend on you, they can get pensions under the SS Total Disability plan. These pensions are worth 10% of your basic monthly pension, or P250, whichever is more. Substitutes are not allowed.

If you get a full disability pension from Social Security, you also get a 13th month’s pension in December. If you’re getting a partial disability pension, you get this benefit as long as your pension lasts 12 months or more.

How Much is the SSS Partial Disability Benefit?

The calculation for the Partial Disability benefit is done using the following methods:

  • Multiply the monthly pension by the total number of monthly SSS contributions you’ve made, and then by the percentage of your total disability.
  • Multiply the monthly pension by 12, and then by the percentage of your disability.

The method that results in a higher amount is the one that will be used for your benefit.
