SASSA Older Person grants for second half of 2024
In October 2024, the government is planning to implement an increase in grants for individuals over 60. The grant amount will rise from R2,180 to R2,190. Moreover, for individuals over 75, the grants will see an increase from R2,200 to R2,210. The best part of this positive change is that beneficiaries will not be required to reapply or take any additional steps to receive these increased grant amounts.

Who Can Get These Grants?
To be eligible for the SASSA Older Person grants in the second half of 2024, you need to:
- Be 60 years or older.
- Live in South Africa permanently.
- Have no income and pass certain tests related to assets and means.
How to Apply
Even though SASSA is trying to introduce new ways to verify people’s identities, you still need to apply for these grants in person. You can’t do it online. You need to go to a SASSA office to process your application.
Keep in mind that it can take more than three months to process these grants. But if your application is approved, you’ll get money dating back to when you applied. You can appeal the decision within 90 days if your application is denied.
When Can These Grants Be Stopped?
Your SASSA Older Person grants can be stopped if:
- The person receiving the grant dies.
- You go into a government-funded institution like a prison or rehab centre.
- Your financial situation improves and you no longer pass the asset/means tests.
- You lie on your application, which is fraud.
- A SASSA officer made a mistake when approving your grant.
- You don’t follow the rules during your grant review.
- You leave South Africa for more than 90 days.
Regular Checks
When you submit an application for the SASSA grant, you should be aware that SASSA may conduct periodic reviews to verify that your circumstances have not changed since your initial application. These reviews are an essential part of the process to ensure that the grant recipients still meet the eligibility criteria for receiving the grant.
You will be notified in writing three months before the review, providing the date, time, and location of the review. This notification allows you to prepare and participate in the review process as needed.
