SASSA helps people who don’t have enough money by giving them grants and allowances. Right now, they are helping about 29 million people in South Africa. This includes:

  • Older People Who Get Pensions – 4 Million SASSA provides an Older Person’s Grant, also known as a state pension, to South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees who are 60 years or older. The maximum amount that an individual can receive is R2,180 per month, and if the individual is older than 75, they will receive R2,200.
  • Childcare Beneficiaries –13 Million SASSA provides the Child Support Grant to primary caregivers of children. The primary caregiver must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee, and both the caregiver and the child must reside in South Africa.
  • Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Recipients – 10 Million The SRD Grant, also known as the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant, is a temporary grant introduced by the South African government in 2020 to provide financial assistance to individuals and families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This grant aims to help those with insufficient means to meet their basic needs.
  • Disabled and War Veterans – About 2 Million SASSA provides grants to individuals who are disabled or who were war veterans. The War Veteran’s Grant is given to South African citizens who served as soldiers during the Second World War (1939 – 1945) or the Korean War (1950 – 1953). To receive this grant, the individual must be either 60 years old or have a disability, and they shouldn’t already get another social grant.

More Money for Grants

Earlier this year, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said that the amount for permanent SASSA grants will increase. He said this when he was talking about the budget for 2024. Here’s how much more money people will get:

  • Older people, war veterans, disabled people, and people who take care of a dependent will get R100 more. They will get R90 of this in April and the other R10 in October.
  • People who take care of foster children will get R50 more.
  • People who get money for children will get R20 more.
  • The Social Relief of Distress grant will increase by R20 or 5.7% from April 1.

About 26 million people in South Africa get social grants. This costs about R266 billion every year.
