Miles Morland Writing Scholarships 2024
Many aspiring writers struggle to find the time and financial support to pursue their passion for writing. This is especially challenging when they are just starting out in their writing careers. Fortunately, there are scholarships available to assist these writers on their journey. These scholarships are awarded annually to a select few writers, providing them with the financial support they need to focus on honing their craft and working on their first book without the burden of financial stress.

Who can apply?
Anyone who writes in English and was born in Africa, or whose parents were born in Africa, can apply for these scholarships.
What do the winners get?
The award recipient will receive £18,000, which will be disbursed monthly over the course of one year. If the recipient is an author working on a nonfiction book and requires additional time for research, they may be eligible for an extension of up to eighteen months, with corresponding additional financial support.
How to apply?
In order to apply for the scholarship, you are required to submit a piece of your writing that falls within the range of 2,000 to 5,000 words. This written work must be in English, and you must provide evidence that it has been published and sold.
The evaluation of your submission will be based solely on its quality. It’s important to note that the scholarships do not cover research work, or writing on religious or political subjects.
What do the winners need to do?
The recipients of the award are required to produce a minimum of 10,000 new words every month, which must be submitted via email. This pattern will persist until they complete their book or until the end of one year, whichever comes first. Even if they complete the initial draft of their book before the year is up, they will still be entitled to the award. They can utilize any extra time to enhance the quality of their book.

When applying, you need to send:
- A piece of your writing that is 2,000 to 5,000 words long. This writing should have been published and sold.
- Proof that your writing was published and sold.
- A description of the new book you want to write. This should be 400 – 1,000 words long.
- A document that shows that you, or your parents, were born in Africa.
- A short bio of 200 – 300 words.
